
Why Upholstered Furniture Arrives in the Gulf Smelling of Mould
Upholstered goods arrive mouldy because of the water the cargo itself carries; how moisture content, desiccant and liners control the container condensation cycle at sea.

The situation
Upholstered furniture arrives at Jebel Ali or Nhava Sheva with grey spotting on the fabric and a musty smell that survives cleaning. The container is dry when it is opened, which leads to a long argument about whether the goods were wet when they were loaded. Usually they were not. The water came out of the cargo itself and out of the air sealed in with it, then condensed on cold steel and fell back.
A steel box stuffed in humid southern China carries a substantial quantity of water in its air, its timber frames, its corrugated cartons and its foam. At sea the roof cools at night and warms through the day. Each cycle drives condensation onto the underside of the roof, which drips, and onto any surface sitting below the dew point. Given enough days above roughly seventy-five per cent relative humidity, mould establishes on fabric, adhesives and board.
What made it difficult
- Mould spores are already present on textiles, timber and corrugated board, so the only variable that can be controlled is the moisture available to them.
- The Shenzhen to Gulf and Shenzhen to west coast India lanes are short by ocean standards, often in the region of two to three weeks, but they cross a wide temperature and humidity gradient, and it is the gradient rather than the distance that drives condensation.
- Sealing cargo in unvented plastic film without desiccant makes the problem worse, because it traps the moisture the cargo itself releases.
- A condensation claim is difficult to sustain unless pre-loading condition, moisture content readings and stuffing photographs were recorded at the time.
How it is approached
Control starts before the container arrives. Timber frames should be dried and measured rather than assumed, and a pin-type moisture meter reading taken at the factory is the single most useful record in the file. Corrugated cartons stored in an unconditioned warehouse through a humid season carry moisture of their own and will also have lost a meaningful part of their stacking strength. Foam and fabric are conditioned indoors, and cartons are closed only once the components are dry.
The container is then prepared rather than simply accepted. Inspect for roof leaks, previous cargo residue and a dry floor, then fit a kraft or cardboard roof liner so that condensation forming on the steel is absorbed instead of dripping onto the cartons below. Desiccant, usually calcium chloride in pole or blanket form, is hung against the walls and doors in a quantity set against the cargo's own moisture content and the length of the voyage.
Loading practice matters as much as the materials. Stuffing should not take place in the open during rain with the doors exposed. Cartons are kept off direct contact with the side walls, where condensation runs down, using dunnage or a deliberate air gap, and pallets are not sealed in unvented stretch film. Ventilated containers help only where the outside air is drier than the air inside, which on a tropical routing it frequently is not, so ventilation is no substitute for desiccant.
Finally, the condition is recorded. Moisture meter readings, desiccant quantity and placement, the liner fitted, container and seal numbers, and a short photographic sequence from empty container to closed doors. Where damage nevertheless appears, that file determines whether the loss is recoverable under cargo insurance and whether the cause can be traced to the packing, the container or the voyage. Without it the discussion becomes speculation, and the importer generally absorbs the cost.
