The situation

Cotton, linen, wool and jute are hygroscopic: they absorb and release moisture as the surrounding air changes. A container stuffed in humid conditions in southern China and routed across warm water carries that moisture with it. Each night the steel roof cools, and when it falls below the dew point of the air inside, moisture condenses on the roof and walls and falls back onto the cargo. This is container rain, and it is produced inside the box.

It presents at destination as tide marks up the sides of cartons, staining through the outer layers, rust spotting from staples and fittings, and mildew on the garments themselves. Textiles are unforgiving here, because a few mould spots are a quality rejection even where the garment is otherwise sound. Claims are frequently contested, since condensation inside a structurally sound container is not obviously anyone's failure.

What made it difficult

Both the fibre and the packaging carry water into the container, so a load that looks dry at stuffing can still seal in several litres.
Wooden pallets and cartons are significant moisture reservoirs, and ISPM 15 heat treatment confirms phytosanitary compliance rather than a safe moisture content.
A standard dry container is not a controlled atmosphere, and ventilated or temperature-controlled alternatives carry cost and availability limits on many port pairs.
Damage is found at destination quality control, by which time the container has been unloaded and the evidence of cause has usually been separated from the cargo.

How it is approached

Control starts before the doors close. Moisture content is specified and checked for the goods and for the packaging, cartons are stored under cover rather than on a damp floor or in a yard, and pallets are kiln-dried or plastic rather than freshly sawn. A carton that has spent a week absorbing monsoon humidity is not neutral packaging; it is an input to the problem that travels with the cargo.

The container itself is inspected before stuffing. A pinhole in the roof, a perished door gasket, residue from a previous cargo or a damp floor will each undo everything done afterwards, and rejecting a container costs an hour where accepting one can cost the consignment. The inspection is quick, repeatable and is the control most often skipped when the yard is under time pressure.

Desiccant is then sized rather than symbolic. Container desiccant is calculated against the volume of the box, the moisture load of the cargo and packaging, and the expected duration and climate of the voyage, then hung from the lashing rails so air can circulate around it. Floor protection, clearance from the walls and roof, and an air gap in the stow all matter, because desiccant cannot help cargo pressed against cold steel.

Finally, the voyage is made legible. Temperature and humidity loggers placed in the load, photographs of the stuffing and of the empty container, and a record of the container and seal numbers turn an argued arrival condition into a documented one. That record is what allows a genuine leak to be separated from condensation, which in turn decides whether the conversation belongs with the carrier, the insurer or the packing supplier.

Carriers commonly rely on exclusions for inherent vice and insufficient packing, and condensation inside a structurally sound dry container is generally treated as a characteristic of the cargo rather than a carrier failure. The position changes if the container was defective. Cargo insurance that covers condensation damage, supported by loggers and stuffing photographs, is the practical protection.
