Panels, inverters and mounting systems each behave differently in transit. What to know about handling, classification and project sequencing.

China manufactures a large share of the world's solar modules and associated balance-of-system equipment, and the freight profile of a renewables project is unusual: enormous volume, high fragility, tight installation sequencing, and a duty and trade-remedy environment that changes more often than most categories.

Solar modules are the defining cargo. They are large, flat, heavy for their size, and genuinely fragile in a way that is not always visually obvious. Microcracks in cells caused by flexing or point loading during handling may not be visible on arrival but will show up as reduced output over time — which means damage can be discovered long after the claim window has closed. This makes handling specification and pre-shipment condition documentation unusually important.

Modules ship in purpose-built pallets, normally vertically on edge rather than stacked flat, because edge loading distributes stress through the frame rather than across the glass. Pallets should not be double-stacked unless explicitly designed for it, and forklift handling must engage the designed lifting points. A large proportion of module damage happens in the warehouse rather than at sea.

Inverters and electrical components have the opposite profile: less fragile mechanically, far more sensitive to moisture and salt. They should be packed with desiccant inside the enclosure and stored under cover, and they should not be the cargo you leave sitting on a quay while clearance is sorted out.

Mounting structures and racking are usually steel or aluminium, dense, and frequently out-of-gauge in length. They often move on flat racks, and the length needs to be measured and declared accurately because it drives the space blocked and therefore the price.

Classification and trade measures deserve particular attention in this sector. Solar equipment has been subject to anti-dumping and countervailing measures in several major markets, and the applicable treatment can depend on both the classification and the origin in ways that are more consequential than usual. Confirm the current position for your destination before committing to a purchase, because the duty exposure can dwarf the freight.

Project sequencing is the final consideration. A renewables installation follows a defined build order, and equipment arriving out of sequence creates storage cost and site congestion rather than progress. Mounting systems are needed before modules; inverters and electrical works follow. Where a project spans several shipments, sequencing them to the construction programme rather than to the factory's production convenience is the single biggest thing logistics can contribute.
