The situation
Process plant sections reach a size at which containerisation stops being an option. A pressure vessel, a column, a large skid or a storage tank can exceed not only container dimensions but the platform length and payload of a flat rack, or would need so many flat racks that the arithmetic stops making sense. At that point the shipment becomes breakbulk, carried in the hold or on the deck of a multipurpose vessel.
Breakbulk behaves differently from container freight in almost every respect. There is no standard slot and no standard rate, since freight is quoted on weight or measurement. Loading is a lift performed against a plan rather than a driver handing over a sealed box. The vessel's loading window replaces the container cut-off, and at Dammam the receiving side has to be arranged in advance because no container yard exists to absorb an unplanned piece.
What made it difficult
- Breakbulk freight is charged on a weight or measurement basis, so a light but bulky skid is priced on its volume and a compact heavy piece on its tonnage.
- Loading depends on the lifting capacity available, either the vessel's own gear or a shore crane, and the heaviest single piece decides what capacity the ship must have.
- Multipurpose vessel schedules are less frequent and less fixed than container services, so cargo readiness has to align with a loading window rather than a weekly cut-off.

How it is approached
The first deliverable is a piece list rather than a quotation. Every item carries dimensions, gross weight, centre of gravity, lifting point locations and a statement of whether it can be slung directly or needs a spreader beam. From that list come the weight and measurement figures on which freight is based, and the heaviest single lift, which determines which vessels and which berths can take the cargo at all.
Vessel selection follows the heaviest lift and the loading port's capability. A multipurpose vessel with combinable derricks can self-load at a berth without relying on shore crane availability, while a port with reliable heavy shore cranes opens a wider range of tonnage. For a single plant section, booking on a liner multipurpose service usually beats a part charter on both cost and certainty, and the carrier will want the piece list before confirming anything.
Packing for breakbulk is engineering rather than boxing. Each piece needs a cradle or skid matched to its own load paths, lifting lugs certified for the intended lift, and seafastening designed against the motions the vessel can expect. The stowage plan and lashing calculation are the carrier's responsibility but rest entirely on data the shipper provides, so incorrect weights at this stage produce a refusal at the quay rather than a discussion.
The receiving side at Dammam is planned in the same detail as loading: discharge by ship's gear or shore crane, a laydown area reserved, trailers positioned for direct discharge to vehicle where that is possible, and customs documentation prepared item by item. Saudi import requirements are registered through the SABER platform, with a certificate of conformity where the product falls under a technical regulation, and invoice, packing list and bill of lading descriptions must agree exactly.
