Furniture is the classic volumetric cargo: you will run out of cubic metres long before you run out of payload. A 40ft high-cube container holds roughly 76 cubic metres of usable space and will take around 26 tonnes, and a furniture load will typically hit the volume ceiling at well under half that weight. Everything about controlling furniture freight cost follows from that single fact.
The first lever is flat-pack versus assembled. The difference is not marginal. An assembled dining chair might occupy four or five times the volume of the same chair knocked down. If your product can ship flat and be assembled at destination, the freight saving per container is usually far larger than the assembly cost, and it compounds on every shipment.
The second lever is carton design. Furniture cartons are frequently sized to the convenience of the factory rather than to the container. A carton 5cm too long can mean one fewer row per container, which on a full load is a measurable percentage of your freight bill. It is worth calculating the loading plan before finalising carton dimensions, not after.
The third is nesting and mixed loading. Chairs that stack, tables that ship with legs detached, and case goods that can take smaller items inside their voids all buy volume back. This needs to be agreed with the supplier as a packing specification, because a factory optimising for its own handling speed will not do it spontaneously.
Damage is the other half of the problem, and it pulls against the first half. Every cubic metre you save by packing tighter is a cubic metre of protective void you have removed. The resolution is not to pack loosely but to protect selectively: corner protection on anything with an edge, surface film or tissue on anything polished or veneered, and edge boards under strapping so the strap does not bite into the product.
Upholstered furniture has its own failure mode, which is moisture. A container crossing the tropics goes through repeated condensation cycles, and fabric absorbs it. Desiccant appropriate to the container volume, and moisture-barrier wrapping on anything absorbent, is cheap insurance against arriving with mould on a full load.
On timing: furniture demand is seasonal in most destination markets, and the ocean peak from China overlaps awkwardly with the pre-Christmas retail build. Booking furniture volume against the September to November window without allowing for rolled sailings is a reliable way to miss a season. Build the buffer in, or move the order earlier.
Finally, consider LCL carefully. Furniture consolidated into a shared container is handled more times than a full container load, and each handling is a damage opportunity. Where volume is marginal between a large LCL and a small FCL, the FCL is often the better commercial decision even at a slightly higher headline rate, because the damage rate is lower.
