Two forwarders quote the same port pair. One says twenty-eight days, the other thirty-eight, and both are quoting accurately. The difference lies not in the rate or in anyone's diligence but in the string: the rotation of ports the vessel serves, where your port sits within it, and how many times the container is lifted between loading and discharge. Reading a schedule properly means reading the rotation rather than the transit figure at the end of the row.
A liner service is a loop. A set of vessels is deployed on a fixed rotation of ports and sails it repeatedly, usually producing a weekly departure from each call. Your transit is therefore determined by your load port's position in that loop relative to the discharge port, so loading near the end of the Asian leg can mean a week less on the water than loading at the beginning, on the same service and the same vessel.
The columns that actually govern you are not the ones most shippers read first. Vessel name and voyage number identify the sailing and belong on every instruction you send. The estimated departure is informational. The binding dates are the documentation cut-off, the verified gross mass cut-off and the container yard or gate-in closing, which typically fall several days before departure and earlier still ahead of a public holiday. Transit is quoted port to port and excludes clearance and inland delivery.
Where a service is not direct, the container is discharged at a hub, sits in the yard, and is loaded onto a second vessel. That connection is a real operation with a real window. A two-day connection at a hub with frequent onward sailings carries little risk; a seven-day gap, or a connection onto a service running fortnightly, is where a single missed lift becomes a fortnight. Ask which hub and which onward service, by name, before booking.
This is why two services on the same lane diverge so widely. One makes three intermediate calls and yours is the first of them; another makes seven and yours is the second. One routes through a canal, another around a cape because of a security situation on the direct route, adding sea days that nothing at either end can recover. One calls at a port with chronic berth waiting. All of that is in the rotation and none of it in the headline.
Cargo from a secondary origin usually rides a feeder to the mainline hub, and the feeder is where schedule risk concentrates. Feeder frequency is lower, capacity is smaller, and the effective cut-off sits earlier than the mainline dates imply, sometimes by the better part of a week. When a schedule shows an origin the mainline vessel does not actually call at, establish which feeder carries the box and what the recovery is if it misses the connection.
Treat the published arrival as a proforma rather than a promise. Schedules are built with buffer days and vessels adjust speed to hold the rotation, so an intermediate delay is sometimes absorbed and sometimes not. Blank sailings withdraw a week of capacity from a service at short notice and push that cargo onto the following departure, which is then full. Schedule reliability varies considerably between strings on the same trade and is worth asking about explicitly.
Use the schedule backwards. Start from the date goods must be available at the consignee, subtract the inland leg, subtract a realistic clearance allowance for that country, and you have the arrival you require. Then identify the sailings that meet it and check their cut-offs against the date the factory will genuinely be finished and the documents complete. The sailing whose cut-off you can actually meet, not the fastest one listed, is the booking to take.
So ask for the full rotation between load and discharge port, the transhipment port and connecting service where there is one, the three cut-off dates, and whether the arrival shown is proforma or updated. Then ask what the fallback sailing is. Identifying the second option before you need it costs nothing at the time of booking, and it is the difference between losing two days and losing two weeks when the first one falls over.
